How to tune a cello
The strings run C2, G2, D3, A3 from low to high — an octave below the viola. Sit down and fix the endpin first so the instrument is stable before you start. Begin on the 4th string (C) and work up. C is about 65.4 Hz and G about 98 Hz, so hold each low string a few seconds longer and wait for the reading to settle. Use the fine tuners for small corrections and the pegs when the pitch is far off, turning slowly while pushing gently inward so the pitch does not jump.
Cello tuning tips
The low cello strings decay slowly but carry few overtones, so a long bow stroke near the bridge gives a steadier reading than pizzicato. Bow one open string at a time — a double stop confuses the detector. If a pitch wobbles on a wolf note, move the bowing point between the bridge and the fingerboard and try again. Cello pegs are large: support the neck with your left hand while turning so the instrument does not swing away from you.
