Guitar tuning chart

String-by-string notes for 20 common tunings, ready to use with the online tuner.

How to read the table

Columns 6 to 1 run from the thickest string to the thinnest. Find the tuning you need and compare string by string; if you are unsure, start from standard tuning.

In the guitar tuner, pick the same name from the tuning preset. The page then lists every string of that tuning so you can work through them one at a time.

What the common tunings are for

Standard (E-A-D-G-B-E) is the most universal choice and the basis of nearly all chord shapes and method books.

Drop D lowers only the 6th string to D, so one finger gives you a power chord — a staple of rock and metal.

DADGAD has an open, droning quality often heard in Celtic music and fingerstyle playing.

Open tunings (Open D/G/A/C/E) tune the open strings to a chord, which is why slide players rely on them.

Half-step and whole-step down reduce overall tension for a thicker sound and make it easier to match a singer.
