YouTube Thumbnail Downloader (HD, One Click)
Paste a YouTube link or 11-character video ID below and click “Get thumbnails” to see every cover size of that video: up to 1280×720 (maxresdefault), plus 640×480, 480×360, 320×180 and 120×90. Click “Download JPG” to save one or copy its URL. Videos without an HD cover are flagged automatically. Free, no sign-up — your browser loads the images straight from YouTube.
Every public video’s thumbnails live at a fixed address: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/FILE.jpg. These are all the sizes this tool checks:
File name
Size
Ratio
Notes
maxresdefault.jpg
1280 × 720
16:9
Highest quality; only exists for videos uploaded in 720p+ or with a custom thumbnail — often missing on old videos
hq720.jpg
1280 × 720
16:9
Another 1280×720 rendition; some videos (including some Shorts) have this but not maxres
sddefault.jpg
640 × 480
4:3
Standard definition; 4:3 frame, so 16:9 videos get black bars
hqdefault.jpg
480 × 360
4:3
High quality; almost every video has it, 4:3 with black bars
mqdefault.jpg
320 × 180
16:9
Medium; 16:9 without bars, every video has it
default.jpg
120 × 90
4:3
Smallest, used in lists

FAQ
How do I download a YouTube video’s thumbnail?
Copy the video link, paste it into the box on this page, click “Get thumbnails”, then click “Download JPG” on the size you want. The largest is the 1280×720 maxresdefault cover.
What is the largest YouTube thumbnail resolution?
The largest public size is 1280×720 (maxresdefault.jpg or hq720.jpg), which is also YouTube’s recommended upload size. Some maxres files are slightly different, such as 1278×720; the tool shows the real pixel size.
Why do some videos have no 1280×720 cover?
YouTube only creates maxres for videos uploaded in 720p or higher or with a custom thumbnail. For older or low-resolution videos it returns a grey 120×90 placeholder; the tool detects it, marks the size as not available and tags the best remaining size.
Can I download a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?
Yes. Paste the youtube.com/shorts/… link. Shorts thumbnails are still landscape files (the vertical frame gets blur or bars), and the quality depends on which sizes YouTube generated.
What if the download button doesn’t work?
Some browsers, extensions or networks block cross-site downloads. The card then shows an “Open original” link: open it in a new tab and right-click (long-press on phones) → “Save image as” to keep the same file.
Why does it say it can’t reach YouTube’s image server?
Thumbnails load directly from i.ytimg.com in your browser; this site does not proxy them. If your current network (a workplace or some regions) blocks YouTube, you’ll see this message — try again on a network that can reach YouTube.
Why do sddefault and hqdefault have black bars?
Those sizes are 4:3 (640×480 and 480×360), so a 16:9 picture gets bars above and below. For a bar-free landscape image pick maxresdefault, hq720 or mqdefault (320×180).
Can I freely use someone else’s YouTube thumbnail?
Thumbnails are copyrighted by the video’s creator. Personal reference, study or showing it when you link to that video is usually fine; get the creator’s permission before commercial use or republishing.
Do I need to sign in or install an extension?
No. Thumbnails are public images, so just open this page and paste a link — it works in desktop and mobile browsers.
Can I turn a downloaded thumbnail into a new cover?
Yes. Click “Make a new thumbnail from this cover” in the results to load the best-quality cover as the background in the 17NAS YouTube Thumbnail Maker, then add text and stickers and export a 1280×720 PNG or JPG.
