How to tune: Ukulele

  1. Pick a tuning above (if unsure, keep the first, standard one).
  2. Press “Start tuning” and allow the microphone in the browser prompt.
  3. Play one string at a time close to the mic and wait for a steady reading.
  4. Needle left (flat): tighten. Needle right (sharp): loosen. The green zone means in tune.

The four strings run G, C, E, A from the 4th string to the 1st. Note that the 4th string is not the lowest: in High-G it is G4, higher than the 3rd string C4 — that is the re-entrant tuning ukuleles are known for. Pluck one string at a time; left means tighten, right means loosen.

Ukulele tuning tips

Nylon strings stretch a lot, so a new ukulele or a fresh set drifts easily. Pull the strings gently after fitting, tune, play for a few minutes, then tune again. The body is small and quiet, so keep it 10–15 cm from the microphone. If the 4th string sounds higher than the 3rd, that is normal High-G behaviour; switch to Low-G (G3) in the preset if you would rather have it as the lowest string.

Is microphone audio uploaded?

No. Web Audio analyzes sound in real time on your device. This page does not record, upload or store microphone audio.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between High-G and Low-G?

High-G has G4 on the 4th string, above the 3rd string C4 — the traditional ukulele tuning. Low-G replaces it with G3 an octave lower for a fuller bass, often used for solo playing.

Why is the 4th string higher than the 3rd?

That is normal for High-G and is called re-entrant tuning. Switch to Low-G if you prefer a conventional low string.

My nylon strings keep drifting. What should I do?

Nylon stretches, so drifting for the first two or three days is normal. Pull them gently, tune, play a while, then tune again — they settle quickly.

Do I need a pickup?

No. A ukulele is quiet, but bringing the body close to the microphone is enough for a stable reading.
