Subscription Cost Calculator

Add your AI, cloud storage, video, music and software subscriptions to see instantly what you spend per month, per year and per day — and what AI subscriptions alone cost you each year. Pick from 41 popular services (Oct 2026 reference prices, always editable) or add any custom subscription in 11 currencies, then estimate how long a self-hosted NAS would take to pay for itself. Everything stays in your browser.

Would a self-hosted NAS save money?

Tick the subscriptions a NAS could replace (cloud storage and photo backup are the usual ones), enter hardware, drives and power use, and see the payback period and 3- and 5-year savings.

          Subscriptions a NAS replaces

No cloud storage, video or music subscriptions in your list yet.

Only cloud storage is ticked by default. A NAS can only replace media you own (your own library), not the licensed catalogues of Netflix or Spotify — tick video/music only if that applies to you.

This is a rough estimate. It ignores drive failures and replacements, off-site backup, your maintenance time, network/remote-access costs and data-loss risk. With a NAS you are responsible for backups (follow the 3-2-1 rule); it is not a full substitute for a cloud service.

🔒 Privacy: your list is stored only in this browser (localStorage). 17NAS servers never receive it; share links keep the data after the # in the URL, which is not sent to the server either.

          How the numbers are calculated

Each subscription is first converted to a monthly cost: monthly = amount; quarterly = amount ÷ 3; yearly = amount ÷ 12; weekly = amount × 52 ÷ 12; every N months = amount ÷ N. It is then converted into the display currency (amount ÷ source rate per USD × display rate per USD) and summed for the monthly total; yearly = monthly × 12 and daily = yearly ÷ 365.

NAS comparison: monthly energy = power (W) × hours per day × 365 ÷ 12 ÷ 1000 (kWh); monthly running cost = energy × price per kWh + other yearly costs ÷ 12; payback months = (hardware + drives) ÷ (replaced subscriptions per month − running cost per month); N-year savings = replaced subscriptions over N years − (upfront cost + N years of running cost).

The default NAS figures (for USD: $450 hardware, $300 drives, 30 W running 24/7, $0.17/kWh) are a rough reference for a typical entry-level 2-bay setup — replace them with your own quotes and electricity price. Use the drive power calculator for a more precise power figure.

          Features and limitations

What the calculator can and cannot do, so you can judge how far to trust the numbers.

          Feature Status Notes
Preset prices Yes Official list prices for 41 services as of Oct 2026, editable after adding; regional pricing, taxes, student plans and promotions are not detected automatically.
Custom subscriptions and cycles Yes Weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly and every 1–120 months; weekly plans are annualised as 52 weeks.
Multi-currency Yes 11 currencies with built-in reference rates from 2026-10-07, editable; card foreign-transaction fees are not included.
Chart, top items, renewals Yes Upcoming renewal dates are shown on the page; no emails or push notifications are sent.
NAS payback estimate Yes Linear estimate from hardware, drives, electricity and other yearly costs; excludes drive replacement, backups and your time.
JSON/CSV export & import, share link Yes CSV includes a UTF-8 BOM so Excel opens it correctly; share links encode the list after the #.
Live exchange rates Partial Only when you click “Fetch latest rates” (open.er-api.com, updated daily); falls back to built-in rates.
Sync across devices / accounts No No accounts or cloud storage; move between devices with export/import or a share link.
Automatic bank/card detection No It never connects to banks or payment apps; add subscriptions manually or import a CSV.

          FAQ

How do I work out what my subscriptions cost per month?

Add each subscription: tap a preset for popular services, or use “Add a custom subscription” for anything else. The calculator converts yearly, quarterly and weekly plans into a monthly cost, converts everything into one currency and adds it up, also showing yearly and daily figures.

How much do ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Gemini cost per year?

At US list prices in October 2026: ChatGPT Plus is $20/month ($240/year), Claude Pro $20/month ($200 if paid yearly), Google AI Pro $19.99/month and SuperGrok $30/month. Two or three of them add up to $500–700 a year. Add them to the calculator and the “AI subscriptions cost you…” line shows your exact total.

Are the preset prices accurate? What if my charge is different?

Presets are official list prices published in October 2026 (mostly US prices in USD; China-only services in CNY). Regions, taxes, App Store billing, student or family plans and promotions all change the price. After adding, click Edit and enter the amount and currency from your bill — the calculator always uses what you enter.

Can I add subscriptions that aren’t listed, like yearly or every-6-months plans?

Yes. In “Add a custom subscription”, enter a name and amount and choose weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly or “every N months” (enter 6 for twice a year), plus a category, currency and renewal date. Every item can be edited, duplicated, deleted or switched off so it is temporarily excluded from the totals.

My subscriptions are in different currencies — how are they converted?

Each subscription keeps its own currency and is converted into your chosen display currency for the totals. Built-in reference rates are from 2026-10-07; edit any of them under “Rates”, or click “Fetch latest rates” to pull the day’s rates once from a free public API. Card foreign-transaction fees (often 1–3%) aren’t included — nudge the rate up if you want to account for them.

Is my data uploaded? Will it still be there in another browser?

No. All calculations run in your browser and the list is saved automatically in this browser’s localStorage; 17NAS servers never receive it. That also means it won’t appear in another browser or device, or after clearing browser data — use “Export JSON” as a backup and “Import” it elsewhere, or move it with a share link.

Can I export to Excel? Is the share link safe?

“Export CSV” creates a spreadsheet with a UTF-8 BOM that opens directly in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets, including each item’s monthly and yearly cost; “Export JSON” is a full backup you can import again. A share link encodes the list after the # in the URL, so nothing is stored on a server — but anyone with the link can read it, so share it only with people you trust.

Is a self-hosted NAS really cheaper than cloud storage? How long until it pays off?

It depends on how much you replace. A ~$450 2-bay NAS with $300 of drives running 24/7 at 30 W (≈22 kWh, about $3.70 a month at $0.17/kWh) that replaces iCloud+ 2TB plus Dropbox Plus (≈$22/month) pays back in about 3½ years; replacing a single $2.99 plan never pays back. Enter your own numbers in the NAS comparison — the result is an estimate.

Can a NAS replace Netflix or Spotify?

Usually not. A NAS can run a media server such as Jellyfin or Plex for films and music you own, but it can’t replace a streaming service’s licensed catalogue. That’s why only cloud storage is ticked by default in the NAS estimate; tick video or music yourself only if it really applies.

How can I use this to cut my subscription spending?

Start with the top 5 and the category chart to see where the money goes. Switch off subscriptions you rarely use to see the yearly saving instantly. Keep just one of any overlapping services (two AI assistants, two cloud drives), move the ones you use daily to yearly billing, which is usually cheaper, and add renewal dates so you can decide before each charge.
