Line Numbering Tool
Automatically number every line: custom start value, step, style (1. / 1、 / (1) / 001) and separator, with optional empty-line skipping.
Common uses for line numbering
Numbering a list is one of the most common cleanup tasks: meeting notes, step-by-step instructions, rankings and quiz options often lose their numbers when copied out of Word or a spreadsheet. Paste the text, pick a style, and every line gets numbered instantly.
Start value and step combine freely: start from 0, or use a step of 2 for even numbering (2, 4, 6). The zero-padded style (001) suits file naming and sortable lists. Empty lines are skipped by default so numbering stays continuous.
Everything is generated locally in your browser; the original text is never modified, and the result can be pasted straight back into Word, Excel or your notes app.
How to use
- Paste the text to number, one item per line.
- Choose the start value, step, style and separator; the result updates live.
- Click "Copy" and paste the numbered list wherever you need it.
FAQ
Can I start from 0 or any number?
Yes. Set "Start at" to 0 or any number; the step accepts any integer, e.g. step 2 produces 2, 4, 6.
Are empty lines numbered?
By default empty lines are kept as-is and do not consume a number. Uncheck the option to number them too.
What if my lines already have numbers?
Numbering would stack. Remove the old numbers first (the Find & Replace tool is handy for this), then number again here.
Can I paste the result into Word?
Yes — it pastes as plain numbered text. For Word-native automatic lists, use Word's own list feature instead.
