Why public IPv6 matters for NAS remote access
Most home broadband in the Chinese mainland sits behind carrier-grade NAT, so there is no public IPv4 address to reach a home NAS directly — only relays or hole punching. IPv6 gives every device a public address, which makes it the most direct route for remote access.
Reaching IPv6 is only step one: this page measures whether a browser can open IPv6 sites. For your NAS to be reachable from outside, it also needs a public IPv6 address (not fd… or fe80…), and the ONT/modem and router must allow inbound connections. Many ISP modems block inbound traffic in routing mode; switching the modem to bridge mode and dialling from your own router usually fixes it.
In this data, provinces such as Guangdong 72.8%, Beijing 67.7%, Shandong 65.9% score higher and Guangxi 32.9%, Hebei 49.5%, Sichuan 54.1% lower. If your area is low, first check that IPv6 is enabled on your modem and router.

FAQ
How many users in the Chinese mainland can use IPv6 today?
Among 17NAS visitors in the 30 days to 2026-10-11, IPv6 reachability in the Chinese mainland is 69.8% (95% CI 69.1–70.5%, n=16,959). APNIC Labs measures China’s IPv6 capability at 49.9% for the same period. The two use different methods — see the next question.
Why is the 17NAS figure higher than APNIC’s?
17NAS samples come from visitors who chose to test their IPv6 — mostly NAS and home-router enthusiasts, who are more likely to have IPv6 enabled. APNIC samples users at random through online ads and weights by internet population, so it is closer to the overall level. 17NAS is best used to compare provinces and carriers and to follow trends.
Which carrier has the best IPv6?
In the last 30 days: China Mobile 71.9%, China Telecom 67.8%, China Unicom 70.0%. The gap between them is only a few points; the same carrier varies far more from province to province, so read this together with the province table.
If I can reach IPv6, can I access my NAS from outside?
Not necessarily. This page measures outbound IPv6 from the browser. Inbound access to a NAS also needs a public IPv6 address on the NAS, a modem and router that allow inbound connections, and a carrier that does not block the port. Use the IPv6 test to check your address type, then see the bridge-mode guide.
How are provinces determined, and how accurate is it?
We locate samples with MaxMind GeoLite2 and fill missing provinces with ip2region; both counts and rates use all samples. Mobile networks often exit in the capital or a neighbouring province, so some provinces may be skewed. Rates are hidden below 30 samples, 30–99 is indicative only, and every rate comes with a 95% confidence interval.
How often is it updated, and can I cite it?
Statistics update hourly and the APNIC comparison is refreshed weekly. You may cite it under CC BY 4.0 as “17NAS IPv6 reachability report (17NAS visitor samples)” with the date, or download the CSV/JSON summary.
Methodology
- Reachability = IPv6-reachable samples ÷ (reachable + unreachable). Samples are browser tests that visitors start on the IPv6 test page; repeats from the same network within 300 s are de-duplicated and only samples passing quality checks are counted.
- The headline covers Chinese mainland access networks only; Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are reported separately. Samples exiting via cloud, hosting, proxy or VPN networks are identified by ASN and listed separately, excluded from every regional and carrier rate.
- Geolocation: MaxMind GeoLite2 with ip2region filling missing provinces; province counts and rates both use all samples. Mainland samples without a province count only toward the national figure.
- Sample thresholds: no rate below 30; 30–99 limited (indicative); 100+ sufficient; 300+ ranked. Intervals are Wilson 95% intervals; “vs previous 30 days” significance uses a two-proportion z-test.
- Between 2026-08-07 and 08-14 a logging fault stored only successful results; those samples are marked invalid and excluded everywhere.
- APNIC figures come from APNIC Labs IPv6 Capability Metrics (30-day average), refreshed weekly. APNIC samples via online ads weighted by internet population, a different method from our visitor samples; shown for reference only.
- This measures whether visitors’ browsers can reach IPv6 (outbound). It does not show whether devices can be reached over IPv6 from outside (inbound).
